Use honey first for a cough, new guidelines say

Honey and over-the-counter medicines should be the first line of treatment for most people with coughs, new guidelines recommend.

Antibiotics should rarely be prescribed by doctors for coughs because in most cases they do little to improve symptoms, health officials say.

Most of the time a cough will improve on its own within two to three weeks.

The new recommendations for doctors are intended to help tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance.

Overusing antibiotics is making infections harder to treat, by creating drug-resistant superbugs.

'Huge problem'
A hot drink with honey - and often with lemon and ginger as well - is a well-known home remedy for coughs and a sore throat.

Now new proposed guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Public Health England (PHE) say there is some limited evidence that it can help improve cough symptoms.

Cough medicines containing pelargonium, guaifenesin or dextromethorphan might also be beneficial, they say.

Patients are being advised to use these treatments and wait for symptoms to improve on their own, before going to a GP.

Most coughs are caused by viruses, which cannot be treated by antibiotics and will clear up on their own.

Yet despite this, research has previously found that 48% of UK GP practices have prescribed antibiotics for a cough or bronchitis.

Dr Susan Hopkins, a deputy director at PHE, said: "Antibiotic resistance is a huge problem, and we need to take action now to reduce antibiotic use...

"These new guidelines will support GPs to reduce antibiotic prescriptions and we encourage patients to take their GP's advice about self-care."

Check symptoms
However, the guidelines recommend that antibiotics may be necessary for a cough when it is part of a more serious underlying illness, or when a person is at risk of further complications, such as those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems.

Honey is not recommended for children under the age of one because it occasionally contains bacteria that can cause infant botulism.

Dr Tessa Lewis, GP and chair of the antimicrobial prescribing guideline group, said: "People can check their symptoms on NHS Choices or NHS Direct Wales or ask their pharmacist for advice.

"If the cough is getting worse rather than better, or the person feels very unwell or breathless, then they would need to contact their GP."

Analysis: Antibiotic apocalypse
The draft recommendations are part of a raft of new antibiotic prescribing guidelines being developed jointly by PHE and NICE.

England's chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, has previously warned of a "post-antibiotic apocalypse".

If the drugs fail, infections will become harder to treat and common medical procedures such as cancer treatments and transplants would be too risky, she said.

The consultation on the new guidelines closes on 20 September.

Vitamin C skin care – The challenge

Vitamin C is often regarded as a wrinkle fighter or an anti-aging agent. The main objective of ‘ Vitamin C skin care ’, in scientific terms, is to increase the synthesis of collagen (a structural protein that is found in skin).  The additional benefit of ‘Vitamin C skin care’ is related to its capability of countering free radicals which cause damage to the skin. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/9f/6c/72/9f6c7209cf28bd0a51a62ec85242d6bc--image-skincare-skin-care-products.jpg Vitamin C skin care, however, faces a major challenge today. This is related to the oxidation tendency of Vitamin C skin care products. On coming in contact with any oxidising agent (e.g. air), the Vitamin C in the Vitamin C skin care products,  gets oxidised; thus making the Vitamin C skin care product useless (in fact counter-effective). The oxidised Vitamin C imparts a yellowish-brown colour to the Vitamin C skin care product. This is something that you need to check before buying a Vitamin C skin care product. Even a

'Flesh-eating' STD allegedly reported in England

A rare sexually transmitted disease that causes flesh-eating ulcers on patients’ genitalia has popped up in England,  the Lancashire Post reported. An unnamed female patient https://healthfunyy.blogspot.com/ , who lives in Southport and is between the ages of 15 and 25, reportedly was diagnosed with donovanosis within the last 12 months. Donovanosis, which is spread through sexual intercourse with an infected patient, or by coming into contact with a patient's infected ulcer, is typically seen in India, New Guinea, parts of the Caribbean, central Australia and southern Africa. According to the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),  the painless disease causes progressive ulcerative lesions on the genitals or perineum, which are prone to heavy bleeding. Patients are at risk of extragenital infections that can occur in the pelvic regions, or in intra-abdominal organs, bones or mouth. The lesions may also develop secondary bacterial infections. Why Do Black Americans Fail in School

Image source: https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/rtr3ngj5.jpg Why do Black Americans Fail in School? Black Americans are not the only ones that fail in school. Hispanics fail too. In fact, worldwide, children from poor families generally fail in school. Do American Blacks fail because they are less intelligent than other groups? Many psychologists with a racist agenda say that Blacks fail because they have a lower IQ than Whites. In 2005, White Americans averaged a combined math-verbal SAT of 1068, compared to 982 for American Indians, 922 for Hispanics and 864 for Blacks. So Blacks came bottom of the SAT league table. This seems to indicate scientifically that Blacks are less intelligent than other Americans, on average. What I have left out is that in 2005, Asian-Americans averaged a combined math-verbal SAT of 1091, so Asian Americans topped the SAT league, a fact that white psychologists with a racial agenda have difficulty explaining.
